This workshop helps educators understand how their own brains work, apply that information to their students; recognize why some students have difficulty learning or have special needs; and provides valuable information about the care and feeding of the brain. Faculty Profile: Virginia B. Somers, M.A Virginia Somers enjoyed a long career in education, spanning over 20 years, in schools from Colorado to New York. She later combined an interest in nutrition with her work in education, producing and hosting a series of educational seminars on how the brain works which she has successfully presented at workshops thoughout the North East. She now lives in South Carolina. ROBO-Tripping: Understanding Substance Abuse in the Classroom Workshop Instructor : Johnine Barnes has spent many years counseling student substance abusers and has shared her experiences with teachers and staff at area schools. (Learn more) Workshop Description: Substance abusers comprise many student populations and teachers have to learn ways to cope with these special needs students. This course offers teachers valuable insights and tested strategies for overcoming and minimizing the disruptive impact on their classes , while providing ways to help affected students.Four movies will be used as a "gateway" to understanding alcohol and drug abuse. Workshop Length: 15 hours/ 7 days Multiple Intelligences: How to use All Six Parts of Your Brain ( 15 hours/7 days) Workshop Description This workshop explores all the kinds of intelligence your brain is capable of even though most of the time schools only focus on cognitive intelligence.
