NEW: ENHANCING CRITICAL READING SKILLS FOR TEACHERS ( 14 days, 45 hours)

Reading and Thinking Beyond Words :

This online 30 hour (2 credit) course provides teachers with tools for teaching critical reading more effectively to their students by focusing on two scholarly articles written about the cultural history of the 1960s. Thus this course combines PDE (Pennsylvania Department of Education) academic standards in two areas--- language arts and historical comprehension , interpretation and research.

The course goal is to offer teachers an opportunity to achieve a more sophisticated understanding of text and its structure within a specific historical and cultural context by addressing two key aspects involved in the process of reading comprehension:

**One aspect refers to the rhetorical and linguistic organization of the texts.

**A second aspect focuses on understanding the cultural references within the texts and their relevance to each writer’s message.

This is achieved by integrating lexical, grammatical and rhetorical components with extensive notes on the various social and cultural issues mentioned in the texts. Furthermore, the questions at the end of each section challenge the reader’s cognitive, writing and organizational skills.

Criticism, using universal academic standards, may well be warranted---or it may not. This course will help you to develop your own critical thinking skills and put you in the "driver's seat" when dealing with your own students.
