Description:
Although text books now mention the 9/11 attacks as a defining moment in American history, focus groups with teachers ( NPR, Weekend Edition, 9/9/07) reveal that 80% of them do not "get to" this important event. This course is designed to assist teachers to analyze the 9/11 attacks in the context of the rise of militant Islam and to focus on the causes and consequences of this new challenge to American global leadership. It will also examine and analyze the emerging 9/11 Revisionism which questions whether Islamist militants actually committed the attacks or were blamed for the events as an excuse for our government to curtail civil liberties.

Workshop Description: After World War 11, America reversed course abandoning a long history of isolation from the rest of the world. Today America is a global power leading an increasingly interdependent world.
This workshop prepares educators to bring global issues (such as human rights) into the classroom and to help prepare students to understand when and why America became a global power.After the shocking terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. 2001, this seminar will also analyze the countervailing forces resisting American power and influence.

Workshop Description:
Diversity has become an important concept and a goal for schools. While plenty of material is available on how to adapt to classroom diversity, this immersion workshop helps teachers to understand when and why America changed from a nation with strict limits on immigration to one embracing diversity. The goal of this workshop is to add a historical, political and social dimension to the issue of diversity, leading to a discussion of how America---and the educational community---should respond to the challenges and opportunities.
